The local Rajdhani Daily correspondent,
Bhairahava, found perhaps some minutes to talk with the now sidelined King
Gyanendra, July 3, 2012. We found it interesting and thus the interview is
being translated into English (literal translation only) for
larger audience both within and without . Thanks Rajdhani daily dated
July 4, 2012.
Q1: What should be the
role of the former King in today’s prevailing political context?
Gyanendra Shah: We are in the process of
understanding the people’s inner feelings. As we had been committed for the
prevalence of peace and democracy yesterday, our commitment remains for the
same even as of today. What we have found
is the people now were longing for a role of the Nepali monarchy in the
country’s politics. This is what we have understood. The people have been
making slogans like “Raja Au-Desh Bachau” (King! Save the country). We highly
honour and respect the people’s benevolent feelings. We are determined to act
as per the people’s wishes and aspirations.
Q2: Have you any plans
to jump into politics?
Gyanendra Shah: No Way. There is no question to
enter into the political domain. If we come then we will have our own original
role as the “King of Nepal”. King is a King. There are several political
parties to remain in politics. Let them play politics. If the people really
desire to see me in my own role then only it would be possible. All depends
upon people’s wishes yet.
Q3: So do you mean that
there will be revival of Monarchy in Nepal now?
Gyanendra Shah: For this to happen and take a formal
shape, we will have to wait for some more time with patience. The people are
sovereign. The desire and preference of the people must be respected and
honoured because the people are ultimate authority. I have found the people from across the
country demanding a role of Nepali monarchy.
That’s why, what I think and appeal as well that we should wait for some
time.
Q4: Some even allege
you for having caused the annihilation of your own family. Under these
circumstances, how could the people appeal you for your grand comeback? What
say you?
Gyanendra Shah: This is a grave allegation upon me and the Nepal’s Royal Institution as
well. How much a deep wound pains one, only the one who has been wounded and
undergone through the traumatic pain of the wound understand its better. I have been tortured mentally by such
questions that confront me occasionally. But we have maintained our equanimity
without any deviation. Its facts some time later history will prove. This is
what I presume. But such allegations are being made against me to malign my
credentials.
